Introducing WMAS 1.0

Happy New Year from the Alpine Tech Hut!

With the new year upon us, we’d like to introduce you to our brand spanking new website and brand. Go and check it out, have a play, look out for a few golden easter eggs and let us know what you think. We’re especially proud of Rob’s ability to create a whole new design which looks like a child picked up a crayola pencil and scribbled all over the site and somehow, he still makes it look awesome!

We added the final dusting of icing sugar and carefully placed the cherry on top of our new branding and website during our AGM - Alpine General Meeting. As a remote team we like to get together every quarter for a few days of LOLs (under the pretense of meetings and work). In fact, last week we skied/snowboarded, tobogganed, had a four hour long meeting, ate and drunk our body weight in schweinshaxe, beer and oachkazlschwoaf and generally had a jolly good time (as well as work on our new corporate identity, website and company strategy for the foreseeable future). It’s been a time to reflect on where the company has come from and a time to look to the future.

In writing this post, I have referred to our ‘notable events’ wiki page which we use to keep track of the goings on in the bat cave. The first entry reads:

Jan 2013:

  • Met: First proper company meeting (up the mountain)
  • Lols: First company ski trip to Maria Alm

And for all intents and purposes, we take this entry as the beginning of We Make Awesome Sh. Yes, instac.at was almost two years previous to this, and we all tweeted to unlock Kylie’s timebomb song in 2012, damn it, even the Calvin Harris ‘Dance to Unlock’ App, one of our biggest award winning apps, was created before this date but that first Alpine trip pissed the WMAS name in the snow and that yellow snow was not washed away with the sun and the rain.

2013

Shortly after we decided to make WMAS our livelihoods, the beautiful Rob agreed to join the team to make everything we made, well… beautiful. 2013’s goal was to bring this group of creatives together to Make Awesome Shit.

We continued to create things for fun as well as focusing on client projects; Harlem Shake Roulette was made in one evening in Feb 2013, and since we leapt on the back of Harlem Shake, the internet went mad for it. Other things on our ‘LOLs’ list that year include Vine Vs. Instagram and Standing Novation both of which have gone on to receive positive critical acclaim.

After the success of instac.at we created search instagram which lead on to our AwesomeWall product. In 2013, we created AwesomeWalls for The Olivier Awards, Naughty Boy, The Ministry of Sound, Exeter University and Nightmares on Wax amongst others.

2013 also saw the launch of the Now Running App, Jaguar Skills Ninja Battle, Naughty Boy Hotel Cabana Album Preview and Samsung Galaxy Shoreditch Studios.

We also partied at Ministry of Sound, completed a Borris Bike Boozathon, were shortlisted at the .net awards for best new agency and won two Lovie awards for Calvin Harris.

Boom - 2013 mission accomplished!

2014

2014 marked our second full year of We Make Awesome Sh acting as an actual company and we’re pleased to say that we have gone from strength to strength. The year started, of course, with our AGM - have a look at the video below to get a taste of what we got up to.

The very first version of snowbuddy was created on this trip for our own personal use and we decided it was just too good to keep to ourselves; November of 2014 saw the official launch of the app for everyone to enjoy. To date, snowbuddy has had over 25,000 downloads, been listed in the Guardian’s best apps, T3 magazine and Apple’s best new apps in the UK and US.
Read about snowbuddy - one week in.

We worked with some awesome people. Early in the year we launched Tinie Tempah’s Rap Demonstration App. The app reached the top 5 for Music Apps on the App Store with over 20,000 downloads and a 48% CTR to buy the album. But it didn’t stop there. Our Tinie Rap app then went on to win FWA’s app of the day, gold for Integrated Mobile Experience at the Lovies and finished off by winning the Digital Marketing Innovation Award at Music Allys. We’re pretty chuffed about that!!

NOW That’s What I Call Music asked us to make Now What’s That Song iOS app, which managed to garner almost a million users in the first year, and went “platinum” within the first month… We’ve even got platinum records to prove it!

We continued to build relationships in the music industry and are stoked to have worked with the likes of: Basement Jaxx, La Roux, alt-j, Lenny Kravitz and Now That’s What I Call Music.

We struck up a partnership with Facebook to grant us access to their firehose to add Facebook data into AwesomeWall and the requests for the AwesomeWall technology continued to flood in; this year’s list includes: Paris Saint Germain football club, 5 seconds of Summer, Kiesza, Nike, UEFA Champions League final, Froch vs Groves 2 at Wembley stadium, Budweiser at the World Cup, Glastonbury, Calvin Harris and London fashion Week.

LOLs from 2014 included creating the April Fools Day ‘Inappropriate but Scientifically Proven Fire Alarms’, the irresistible page ‘Don’t Touch My Face’, and the launch of our first game ‘Hungry Henry’. We also partied, * cough * I mean worked, at Glastonbury and ADE and took a helicopter tour around NYC. And last, but by no means least, we welcomed Sophtly to the team.

2014, you were a blast!

2015

Those of you who know us and have worked with us have probably received, are receiving, or will receive our new year e-mail. We’re licking the tip of our pencils, reaching out to some awesome people and flicking through the diary to make 2015 an even more awesome year.

2015 already looks as though it’s going to be a great year; we’ve got some super interesting projects lined up, and we are planning to launch snowbuddy as a paid app to hopefully start putting the bread upon the table. snowbuddy is currently the #1 free ski / snowboard app in the both the US and the UK app stores, fingers crossed we’ll do the same for paid apps as well and make it THE #1 ski / snowboard app.

Huge thanks to everyone who has helped us this far and to everyone we’ve worked with these past few years, you are awesome!

We never set out to make WMAS what it is now, we are incredibly proud and thankful of how far we have come, and we would like to think that we are slowly proving that you can create a remote business with one simple rule, “don’t be a dick”.

So, if you have any ideas for a project, get in touch and together we can make awesome shit…

Here’s to an awesome 2015!
